Go Ahead, Load Up The Calories

We had a dr’s appt today simply to check her weight. She’s gaining weight slower than the charts suggest and the Dr’s a bit concerned. I’m not overly concerned because Jamayia’s still playful and happy and progressing nicely, and her height’s fine. She just isn’t all that interested in solid foods still, but she’s slowly making progress. Turns out that she’s just under 18 lbs. The Dr. wanted to send her for blood work to check her iron levels because we haven’t given her any meat yet. Can’t you find iron in something other than meat?? We’re also not big meat eaters to begin with, so it’s not something that I readily have on hand at home, nor is it something that I personally feel she needs to be eating at a young age. If she’s not big into the simple things like fruit & veggies and pasta, then why harass her tummy with meat just yet? The Dr. did say that at this point, she can eat whatever she wants. I believe the exact words were “I’m okay with her having some yogurt or ice cream everyday. She just need the calories right now.” Wouldn’t you just love that kind of diet?

After a quick trip out and back in, we were off to the lab. I had the ugly task of pinning her down. The (what I assume is) student phlebotomist ushered me into a tiny room, where there’s no room for the stroller. Then she says that she’ll just stick it outside the room, but within eyeshot (hey—if you can say earshot, then eyeshot should be legit too). She explains that for Peds cases, you need 2 people in the room. Then the more experienced phlebotomist came in and the student shut the door. Um, hmm, how am I supposed to see the stroller now?? I was too annoyed to say anything outloud. It would’ve just come across as rude. No need to be rude before they’re about to stick a needle in my baby’s arm. We get set up. I was told to pin down Jamayia; the student was holding her arm straight and the other lady did the actual blood draw. Well, have I mentioned that my baby doesn’t like to be pinned down?? Yes, that was the screaming you heard—we had to hold her down. The actual needle stick seemed like child’s play after the pinning down.

But of course, no day of mine would be complete without more drama, right?? So, they find the vein and start. Of course baby’s Ms. Squirmy Wormy. Then the blood practically stopped flowing. And with her silly manipulations, the lady managed to let the needle slipped out the vein, and then the arm. Then she has the nerve to say to me that she told me to hold Jamayia. Praise God for His restraint because He spared her from a few degrees lesser than this momma’s wrath. Yes, I managed to keep my tongue silent and said nothing. Nothing! I knew I hadn’t let go of Jamayia’s legs & body and that what went on in her arm area was not my responsibility. No need to waste breath in self defense for something that I didn’t cause. I just let that water roll right off my back.

So, they proceeded to the other arm. It worked. But here’s another senseless thing. They collected such a small sample for all the tests they needed to run, that she was unsure of the amount she collected. Yes, she pulled out the needle, and went to check with a lab tech if the amount collected was enough. Um, hello?? If you pull out the needle, how are you gonna collect more? Am I the only one having issues with this lady here?????? Thankfully, my babe’s quite the trooper, and survived this all. Hopefully without any long lasting scars.

Her next appointment is November 15. LOL. Never did I think I’d be praying for someone to actually gain weight.

Baking In The Sun

Ahhh! Gotta love the hot, Cali sun. I’m definitely not missing the weather back home. Just another chill day here. We went out for a bit this morning. Then home, for Jamayia to get a nap. Amanda & her friends went out to a Mary Kay party during the nap. She was trying to drag me along, but no thanks. These events don’t work well with my curious and mobile child. The oddest thing happened while she was out though…

The doorbell rang. I checked the peephole, but all I saw was a huge fingerprint. I wasn’t expecting anyone nor did I recognize the car outside. I knew it wasn’t my sister, because she’d just use her key. So, the doorbell rang about 4-5 times, still with the big fingerprint in the way. The last time, the finger finally moved, and I saw this tall, dark guy there. It was Andrew, a former collegemate of my sister’s. Andums!! It was cool that he took a few minutes out to come and say hi and see Jamayia. He was in the middle of exams, studying hard to be a dentist.

Oh, and Amanda’s face wasn’t all that. The Mary Kay rep didn’t have proper foundation for her, and had to make up some fake colour. I’d love to post the pic, but I’ll spare her for the moment. Should she misbehave, I will post it though…

What?? Your First Time??

Hi. Uh, my name is Sabrina, and I’ve never been to a prayer meeting.

Ha ha ha! Almost sounds like some sorta group therapy admission. But don’t worry, that’s not how my first prayer meeting experience went. Au contraire ma soeur, I sat in a pew, joined in the singing of a couple songs. Had an internal argument over whether to help out their pianist (who was making this one song sound just painful!). Took part, fed my little Moaner while still in my seat. And it was over in 1 hr.

That’s how prayer meeting should be–short, simple and Spirit-filled. I’ve never been to prayer meeting before because we don’t have one at my church. **gasp**–that admission was wayyy more embarassing than my opening line. We used to have one, years ago, when I was just too young to care. Now that I’m older and wiser and have an appreciation and love for God, I’m interested in programs like prayer meeting. It’s just a chance to come together, share a devotional thought and pray with others, if you want to pray outloud, that is. It doesn’t have to be a long, drawn out labourious affair. It’s not painful, it’s not ugly. I enjoyed it and wish to do it again.

Did I ever tell you how Jamayia often moans while eating? And tonite was no exception. Good thing that sanctuary is huge–hopefully she didn’t disturb too many people with her moans. But, I was quite self-concious about it, and slipped outside when I had the chance. Wouldn’t you know that she got quiet once we were outside?? Figures.

We’re Off to See the Wizard of the Wonderful Outlet Mall

**ahem**–stepping into my sultry Marilyn Monroe voice…
Happy birthday to you,
Happy birthday to you,
Happy birthday Sherwy & Mandaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
Happy birthday to you!
stepping out of Marilyn Monroe character…

Yes, the twins are getting older. The big 2-5 for them this year. It still sounds kinda weird to say that my younger siblings are 25. I’ve gotta work on my sister though—she’s got this negative side of her that complains about getting old. She ain’t old! And if she’s old—then what am I????

So, Amanda didn’t know what she wanted to do or eat. But today was definitely Ontario Mills Mall day!!!! If you ask Amanda, she’ll tell you that I “shopped down the place”. But really, I only picked up a few things. And she shopped too.

For real, who can pass up great bargains at The Children’s Place Outlet? Hello—they had $0.99 racks there. Yes, ninety-nine cents per item. They also had a few $7.99 & $4.99 racks at 50% off each. They had a Sean John Outlet store. I bought myself a shirt simply because it was affordable and said “Sean John”. Fear not, this isn’t a habit. Unless we strike oil in the next 30 yrs, that’s probably the only Sean John item I’m ever buying for myself. I visited the Nike Outlet to get something for Hubby. Oh, and a Carter’s Outlet. I like their onesies for Jamayia!! We made the round of the entire mall. I found an appropriate shopping cart cover too. I have a Licker–must cover entire cart. I can now grocery shop during the day, with Bébé!
Jamayia had a great time too. Poor thing just about passed out as soon as we got in the car.

Oh, I must share this shoe story though. My sister took me to a great discount shoe outlet, Off Broadway Shoes. At the front of the store, they have rows galore of fancy shoes at fancy prices. And at the back, they had clearance racks, with a different discount amount per colour-coded sticker. Well, I tried on many a cute pair. I was debating on whether or not to actually purchase any. I have extremely narrow feet, so these shoes were not going to be a sure fit. But, for a fantastic price, I’d at least have a pretty shoe with an okay fit. The shoebox said $70.00, but they were in the wrong box. The discount sticker was 40% off, plus an extra 10%. I hemmed and hawed. They’d be like about $35 after discount. Amanda convinced me to take them to the till to check the price, and I could decide there. At the till, they were $28 and some change after discount. And the shoes Amanda picked up were just over $12. I can’t wait to go back.

We headed out early. When in Southern Cali, you must do whatever’s necessary to avoid traffic. Had I more time, I would’ve definitely tried on actual clothing for myself. I sadly didn’t have time for that. We did stop off for some food though. Yummm….West Indian cuisine.

After chillin’ that evening, Nicole came by with a present for Amanda. Then we headed out to Target. I picked up few DVDs. A couple Tyler Perry plays, and Dreamgirls, as it was only $10. Yes—I said $10!! Then we went to Coldstone Creamery for ice cream. Turns out that they sing you this cute little song on your birthday. The look on Amanda’s face was pretty funny.

Oh, dear People At Visa, is it possible for you to not send me my next couple of bills? I take consolation by the fact that I didn’t overspend, nor spend frivolously. I could’ve done much more…much, much more damage today, had I the proper time.

**evil grin**

Chillaxin’

The cool thing about this trip is the chance to move at a relaxed pace. If we don’t feel like going out, we just chill at home. Didn’t have to run here and there to meet everyone’s needs. So, today, we went to the Loma Linda University Bookstore, to run an errand, then we were off to a nearby mall. We just chilled, really. I didn’t buy anything on this trip. I was holding off for our trip to Ontario Mills Mall. I did get a gelati smoothie and shared some with Jamayia, as there was no sugar or no dairy involved. She seemed to enjoy herself.

Oh, and did I mention that it’s hot here…like h-o-t kind of hot. Over 100 degrees Farenheit, with little or no wind… Better to enjoy it while I have the chance. I hear it’s kinda nippy back home.

Off to Target!

Today was just a chillin’ day. We just sat at home and relaxed in the heat. Amanda rented a movie for me, which I started last nite and finished off today. Daddy’s Little Girls, by Tyler Perry. I enjoyed it—it was a nice movie. I highly recommend it. The actresses who play the 3 daughters in the movie are actually real life sisters. They did such a great job together. I also appreciated how the movie was pretty clean. The language and sexual content weren’t really there. Yippee! Thanks, Tyler, for showing that you can still have a fantastic movie & story line without marring it with foul language and shameful sexual content.

When you see it, let me know what you think.

Oh, and Nicole, my sister’s classmate, came over too. Jamayia took to her right away. Just started smiling and chatting away with her as though they’re old friends. Turns out that Nicole & I seem to have a few things in common, according to my sister. We went to Target that evening. To me, that was an exciting outing because I don’t get to Target too often, only when I’m in the US. And stores in a foreign country are often more exciting than stores in your own home town. LOL. I’d been asking Amanda to go to target, preferably a SuperTarget while I was down there, and/or a SuperCentre Walmart. They both said that Target is better, so Target it was. Good thing too, because I was able to get quite a few small things there. Nicole also has a sweet tooth and loves desserts. I still owe her one. Next time I’m down there, I’ll whip up something tasty.

Good Music, Good Discussion & Beating Granny??

Well, Friday nite was kinda rough, sleepwise. See, during our 3 hr trek home from the airport last nite, Jamayia fell asleep in the car. Bad move, because that just meant delaying her bedtime bigtime. And I guess the excitement of the new place or something made her wake up at like the crack of dawn. I was quite, quite tired and in shock that she was awake so early. She was up around 7 am…I thought she’d get up closer to 9 am… Oh well. I could always nap after church, right?

We went to Mt. Rubidoux church today. I had a fantastic time. I was in for a lovely surprise too. Their pastor was in the midst of a sermon series on the Sabbath. He chose today to wrap it up, instead of the day after I am to leave. It was a very real, and thought-provoking message. I also bumped into an old friend and her family while we were at church. Another great surprise was that Jamayia slept for a good chunk of the service today too! Yay! She woke up during the sermon, though, and I had to step out to feed her. However, I didn’t mind. See, at this church, they make efforts to ensure that the message is being heard. In the foyer, they had a large flat screen tv connected to a good quality speaker system. Their mother’s room is also equipped with a flat screen tv and proper audio, so that you’re truly able to still see and hear the service. They have such a great facility too. When I first visited this church a couple years back, they had no foyer, and the sanctuary was tiny in their old facility. In fact, they used to hold 2 services to accommodate their worshippers and members. Now their new sanctuary is massive, complete with balcony. They also have classrooms (yes, plural), offices and a gym. Good for them!

I did see something quite frightening at church today. I was in the mother’s room feeding Jamayia, and in walked an older lady alone. If you’re in a mother’s room, you should have a child of some sort with you, right? My friend then whispered to me that she has 2 yr old twin grandsons who come and tear the place up. Sure enough, the door then opened, and there appeared a family. The Grandma’s son and his wife were dropping off the twins for Grandma to watch, while they got a break and kept their 1 yr old son. Well, as soon as those boys saw their grandmother, they erupted into tears and screams. My friend then filled me in—they don’t like staying with her because she beats them. Well, I’d never seen any parents literally drop their children off. They actually plopped these boys into the Grandma’s lap, and ran from the room. I hope I was able to mask my horror. Meanwhile, Jamayia’s getting antsy because there are some screaming little bodies carrying on next to her. As soon as the door closed behind the parents, the licks started. She was slapping their legs, practically simultaneously, as she emphasized that they needed to behave in church. Well, I was with the boys. How are you gonna behave when the lady’s acting a hair shy of abusive and your parents abandon you there?? Anyhoo, I too, grabbed my child and fled the room.

Again, due to some unfortunate events, I didn’t eat until late in the day. My cousin was driving down from Pasadena (about 1 hr away), with food. We were going to celebrate Amanda’s birthday. But we were rudely interrupted, and she couldn’t make it anymore. We’ll just have to go see her next week instead.

Jamayia’s naps were just shot for the day. She slept during the car ride in the afternoon. Then, in the evening, we went to visit the same friend from church. We hung out with her family and got into a very interesting discussion on parenthood later on in the evening. I’ll have to share more on that later.

Cali, Here We Come!

What a very, very, very long day. Oh yeah, and did I mention that it was long?

My first flight was at 8:50 am, so I wanted to be at the airport for like 7 ish…just to be sure I had enough time. The baby had no problems waking up either and we were off.

I did the self check in thingee at the kiosk. I knew that Air Canada allowed 2 pcs of checked luggage for me, 1 pc for baby, and carried your car seat and stroller complimentarily, when travelling with infants. So, I had a total of 5 pcs— 2 bags (1 for me, 1 for baby and plenty of room for shopping allowances :-D), 1 pack ‘n play (for sleeping), 1 infant car seat & 1 stroller. The basic necessities, n’est-ce pas? At the kiosk, I said that I had 4 bags to check. You’re allowed to keep the stroller and they stow it for you at boarding time.

Well, to my horror…..

The desk attendant says “you know that luggage allowances have changed, right?” Uh, NO. I asked when that happened —on Sept 4 (tuesday)…it was now the 7th (friday). I had no clue. I didn’t think to peruse the website daily to ensure that luggage allowances had changed in the last 10 days since booking my ticket. Plus, because I was travelling internationally with an infant, I had to call into Air Canada Reservations to book my ticket. The girl on the phone NEVER told me about any upcoming changes. “Oh, she may not have known”. The new changes–only 2 pcs of checked luggage for me, 0 pcs (yes z-e-r-o) for baby, and only umbrella stroller are allowed to go with you to boarding. The bigger things, though collapsible, must be checked. Any extra pieces are charged at $125.00 per piece. Yes–one hundred and twenty-five dollars and zero cents. Again, the look of horror never came off my face. She looked at me and said , well, I’ll let you through today, but you may have to pay on your return. I said thanks, out loud, but in my head, I said no way I’m paying. You’re letting me on your airline with my stuff, I’ll also be bringing it all back home. Don’t mess with me!

The last thing I asked her before I left the desk was–can I please get some help in Calgary with my bags. She said she’d put in the request. Because I was travelling to the US, I’d have to collect my luggage in Calgary and go through customs, then check them for my next flight.

We said bye to Jono and went off. Had no problems going through security. I sedated the baby with some tempra drops and we were good to go. We had the whole row of seats to ourselves on the plane, and she fell asleep before the flight took off. I settled in for watching in-flight tv. Yeah, House, MD for me!

We got to Calgary and I found the area to collect my luggage. Low & behold–I had to do it alone. Now picture this, but not too hard because I don’t need you laughing too hardily at me… But Baby was attached to me via CuddlyWrap. I had a backpack, diaper bag & stroller. Also got a luggage cart. With baby, I collect my 4 pcs of luggage and said a big prayer. Thankfully, I only had a short distance to go, and there was a line up, so I wasn’t holding up anyone. I wanted to put baby in the stroller, but she was hungry and didn’t want me to let her go. So, she stayed on me. I pushed the loaded luggage cart and pulled the stroller behind me. And no one helped me. Not ONE person offered to help. I was quite disgusted, actually.

Anyhoo, we got through customs without incident, although the agent did ask to see my permission letter from Baby’s Daddy because we were travelling alone. Dropped off my luggage and went to get a diaper change and some food. The second flight was nearly full. I had an aisle seat, and the middle was empty and the window occupied. The ladies across from me loved Jamayia instantly. The convo went like this– “Oh, what a beautiful baby. Is she allowed to have cookies?” I was like what??!!! You don’t even know her name, and you’re offering her stuff. I politely declined. Baby went right off to sleep for about 1 hr (this was a 3 hr flight). Just as I was settling down to sleep, she woke up! Poor me… But she was a good girl. Behaved the entire time. I was so scared that she’d only want to walk throughout the entire plane. We just read a lot, and I sang a lot of songs and played a few games, and repeat cycle.

We got into LAX at 2:15 pm. But the luggage took forever to come and then when we got outside, we packed up the car and I had to change a very stinky diaper and feed the baby. The drive that should’ve taken us 1 hr to get to Loma Linda actually took 3. Not impressed. I hadn’t eated much all day either! And baby slept for most of this trek, which meant that bed time was going to be delayed too.

Alas, we made it to Amanda’s place. And I finally ate… yummy. It was simply a chicken burrito–but it was fantastic by that point of the day. Super long day, but we were there.

More to come. I’ll have to write more about the drunk lady & her mother later….

SOLD!!

Once upon a time, a dude came and put this on our front “lawn”…
Well, it’s now sold! Yippee. I’m sure the sold attachment will arrive while I’m gone, so I probably won’t get a pick. But that still doesn’t change the fact that it’s sold. It took a little longer than we though. This was our second offer. The first person totally low-balled us, but we weren’t that desperate to just settle. We did a little volleying action with this offer too—and they accepted. The phone call from my agent went like sorta this:

Sabrina: Hello.
Brent: Hi Sabrina, how are you? So, we had to take the buyers to the hospital…
Sabrina: (in my head) gasp… Whappened?? (out loud) Really?
Brent: (in a laughing tone) Yeah, we beat them up so badly that they have to call an ambulance. (few silent moments). I’m just kidding! They accepted our counter!!
Sabrina: Cool! (and in my head) Thank you, Jesus!

Now onto the shopping. The new owner takes possession on Monday, Oct 29.

I don’t wanna be homeless. Hopefully something comes up soon. It’d be great if Jono finds something while we’re down in Cali. I don’t mind arriving to a new place…

Up, Up And Away…

…to California, that is. Me & Babes will be gone for 2 weeks to visit my sister, for her birthday. She’s currently on her quick summer break, before classes start at the end of September. I’m also looking forward to the shopping. I’m looking forward to spending time at Ontario Mills, and revelling in the smoothies and great food options with h-u-g-e portions.

Oh yeah, and seeing the birthday girl too, of course.
