Five Minute Friday: Brave

The concept of bravery seems to have depreciated in value.  Once upon a time, only those valiant hard-working warriors were labeled as brave.  If someone went through a harrowing experience, a life-altering battle and eked out alive, they were also called brave.  But it seems that these days, the idea of bravery is tossed around without effort.
A first trip to the dentist: brave.  An optional sky dive: brave.  Taking a driver’s license road test: brave.  Enrolling into post-secondary education as a “mature student”: brave.  Approaching that man or woman you have your eye on with hope in your heart: brave.
Yes, bravery does apply up to a point in those cases.  Everyone has different depths and levels of fear.  Those are, for the most part, short-term events.  A onetime thing.  Once they occur, the action can be repeated, but the bravado no longer applies.
What about those who endure?  Those who go to battle day after day, weary, yet persevering with courage?  The brave heroes are those who realize their mistakes and work to correct them.  The people who obey God’s call, and go against the popular flow of society.  There are those who work to teach right from wrong in an age where most wrongs can often be twisted into a right.  And those who fight for freedom, justice and equality.  Brave is loving fully, completely and unconditionally, never expecting anything else in return.
